The Finnish Research School in Women’s and Gender Studies is a collaborative, interdisciplinary graduate school for the dynamic and growing field of women’s and gender studies in Finland.
The Research School’s core operations include regular scholarly courses and theme seminars, annual follow-up meetings as well as individual dissertation supervision. With various associates, the Research School organizes domestic and international scholarly seminars.
The Research School involves the disciplines of women’s and gender studies at the universities of Helsinki, Joensuu, Jyväskylä, Lapland, Tampere and Turku as well as at Åbo Akademi University. The director of the Research School is university lecturer, adj. prof. Kirsi Saarikangas (University of Helsinki). The coordinator is Maija Urponen, M.Soc.Sc. (University of Helsinki).
The Research School currently has six graduate school positions funded by the Ministry of Education from 2007 to 2011, and 11 doctoral students working under other funding. By the end of 2009, the Research School had produced 22 doctoral dissertations. Indirectly it has been involved in the postgraduate studies of many other doctoral students as well.
The Research School is funded by the Ministry of Education, the Academy of Finland and the affiliated universities. It has been in operation since the establishment of the Finnish graduate school system, initially (1995–2006) under the name Gender System Graduate School.
