Jacques Derrida’s work was very much influenced by feminist thought, and subsequently, his thought has also influenced feminist thinking. This intensive course for doctoral students will explore the feminist themes in Derrida’s work. With selected background reading of feminist and non-feminist commentators, the three different phases of Derrida’s encounter with feminism will be scrutinized. First, Derrida’s engagement with Nietzsche in Spurs; second, his Heidegger reading in Geschlecht I – IV; and third, his engagement with the democratic tradition in Politics of Friendship. How does Derrida’s work reflect changing feminist concerns from the 1960’s to the 1990’s? What is the role of “sexual difference” in his thought? How have prominent feminist writers, such as Gayatri Spivak, Drucilla Cornell, and Elizabeth Grosz evaluated the feminist content of his work, and is there still more to say?

The three-day intensive course consists of morning lectures and afternoon discussions on the basis of a reading list that is sent in advance to the students. The course is also part of the program for the Women’s Studies National Graduate School. No funding for participants is available. The number of students will be limited to 12.

Registration starts on Monday 31st August and ends on September 24th. Students interested in taking part in the course should send and e-mail with the subject title “Registration: Feminisms of Jacques Derrida” to Christina Institute’s student affairs secretary Nina Järviö.
